Bonney <\/span>Magambo <\/span>is <\/span>a <\/span>nurse, <\/span>a <\/span>mother, <\/span>and <\/span>a <\/span>determined <\/span>entrepreneur. <\/span>A <\/span>few <\/span>years <\/span>ago, <\/span>she <\/span>was <\/span>diagnosed <\/span>with <\/span>kidney <\/span>failure, <\/span>which <\/span>has <\/span>led <\/span>her <\/span>to <\/span>start <\/span>her <\/span>own <\/span>business. <\/span><\/p>\n

With <\/span>her <\/span>start-up <\/span>H\u00e9moFAB <\/span>and <\/span>her <\/span>project <\/span>FAV <\/span>Protector, <\/span>she’s <\/span>taking <\/span>on <\/span>a <\/span>little-known <\/span>subject <\/span>that <\/span>affects <\/span>millions <\/span>of <\/span>people <\/span>around <\/span>the <\/span>world: <\/span>the <\/span>care <\/span>of <\/span>arteriovenous <\/span>fistulas <\/span>and <\/span>the <\/span>prevention <\/span>of <\/span>unnecessary <\/span>medical <\/span>procedures <\/span>for <\/span>patients <\/span>undergoing <\/span>hemodialysis <\/span>treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n

What <\/span>does <\/span>that <\/span>mean <\/span>exactly? <\/span>Arteriovenous <\/span>fistulas <\/span>are <\/span>a <\/span>connection <\/span>between <\/span>an <\/span>artery <\/span>and <\/span>a <\/span>vein. <\/span>People <\/span>who <\/span>have <\/span>late-stage <\/span>kidney <\/span>failure <\/span>often <\/span>have <\/span>an <\/span>arteriovenous <\/span>fistula <\/span>surgically <\/span>created <\/span>in <\/span>the <\/span>arm <\/span>or <\/span>forearm <\/span>to <\/span>facilitate <\/span>dialysis. <\/span>It’s <\/span>an <\/span>essential <\/span>element <\/span>to <\/span>the <\/span>treatment <\/span>of <\/span>people <\/span>who <\/span>need <\/span>hemodialysis <\/span>but <\/span>it’s <\/span>also <\/span>very <\/span>fragile. <\/span>Bonney <\/span>has <\/span>experienced <\/span>this <\/span>first-hand.<\/span><\/p>\n

“ <\/span>The <\/span>idea <\/span>came <\/span>to <\/span>me <\/span>when <\/span>I <\/span>had <\/span>an <\/span>accident <\/span>on <\/span>my <\/span>fistula <\/span>ending <\/span>up <\/span>with <\/span>a <\/span>significant <\/span>hemorrhage <\/span>and <\/span>I <\/span>realized <\/span>how <\/span>important <\/span>it <\/span>was <\/span>to <\/span>protect <\/span>my <\/span>fistula”, <\/span>she <\/span>explains <\/span>in <\/span>her <\/span>project <\/span>description <\/span>for <\/span>a <\/span>Handicap <\/span>International <\/span>entrepreneurship <\/span>contest <\/span>she <\/span>participated <\/span>in. <\/span>\u201cIn <\/span>two <\/span>years, <\/span>I’ve <\/span>had <\/span>about <\/span>30 <\/span>medical <\/span>interventions <\/span>to <\/span>repair <\/span>damage <\/span>incurred.”<\/span><\/p>\n

That’s <\/span>why <\/span>Bonney <\/span>came <\/span>up <\/span>with <\/span>a <\/span>simple <\/span>and <\/span>ingenious <\/span>way <\/span>to <\/span>try <\/span>to <\/span>avoid <\/span>complications <\/span>related <\/span>to <\/span>her <\/span>FAV: <\/span>to <\/span>protect <\/span>it <\/span>with <\/span>an <\/span>arm <\/span>band. <\/span>It <\/span>first <\/span>started <\/span>with <\/span>a <\/span>simple <\/span>homemade <\/span>design <\/span>that <\/span>provided <\/span>a <\/span>layer <\/span>of <\/span>protection, <\/span>but <\/span>she <\/span>aspires <\/span>to <\/span>build <\/span>a <\/span>fully <\/span>connected <\/span>arm <\/span>band <\/span>that <\/span>not <\/span>only <\/span>shields <\/span>the <\/span>fistula <\/span>from <\/span>harm <\/span>but <\/span>also <\/span>gives <\/span>patient <\/span>and <\/span>doctor <\/span>information <\/span>about <\/span>the <\/span>health <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>fistula <\/span>to <\/span>anticipate <\/span>further <\/span>care.<\/span><\/p>\n

When <\/span>she <\/span>contacted <\/span>medical <\/span>practitioners <\/span>with <\/span>her <\/span>idea, <\/span>they <\/span>couldn’t <\/span>believe <\/span>no <\/span>one <\/span>had <\/span>thought <\/span>about <\/span>it <\/span>before. <\/span>In <\/span>France, <\/span>renal <\/span>failure <\/span>affects <\/span>3 <\/span>million <\/span>people. <\/span>Eight-two <\/span>thousand <\/span>are <\/span>undergoing <\/span>treatment, <\/span>i.e., <\/span>dialysis <\/span>and <\/span>transplantation. <\/span>In <\/span>France, <\/span>there <\/span>are <\/span>forty-eight <\/span>thousand <\/span>patients <\/span>undergoing <\/span>hemodialysis. <\/span>They <\/span>too <\/span>had <\/span>the <\/span>same <\/span>difficulties, <\/span>but <\/span>they <\/span>protected <\/span>their <\/span>AVF <\/span>in <\/span>other <\/span>ways, <\/span>for <\/span>example <\/span>by <\/span>using <\/span>bandages, <\/span>or <\/span>other <\/span>sleeves <\/span>that <\/span>exist <\/span>today <\/span>but <\/span>that <\/span>are <\/span>not <\/span>meant <\/span>for <\/span>this <\/span>type <\/span>of <\/span>use”.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not <\/span>only <\/span>is <\/span>her <\/span>idea <\/span>a <\/span>long-awaited <\/span>solution <\/span>for <\/span>the <\/span>many <\/span>patients <\/span>going <\/span>through <\/span>hemodialysis <\/span>treatment, <\/span>but <\/span>it <\/span>could <\/span>serve <\/span>patients <\/span>suffering <\/span>from <\/span>other <\/span>medical <\/span>conditions <\/span>as <\/span>well. <\/span>\u201cWe <\/span>have <\/span>been <\/span>contacted <\/span>by <\/span>diabetics <\/span>who <\/span>needed <\/span>to <\/span>protect <\/span>their <\/span>pump <\/span>with <\/span>this <\/span>cuff.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

From <\/span>her <\/span>observations <\/span>as <\/span>a <\/span>patient, <\/span>Bonney <\/span>launched <\/span>a <\/span>full-fledged <\/span>entrepreneurial <\/span>project. <\/span>She <\/span>is <\/span>working <\/span>with <\/span>engineers <\/span>and <\/span>designers <\/span>to <\/span>build <\/span>FAV <\/span>Protector, <\/span>her <\/span>revolutionary <\/span>connected <\/span>protective <\/span>armband. <\/em><\/span>\u201c<\/em>The <\/span>project <\/span>evolved. <\/span>I <\/span>started <\/span>with <\/span>the <\/span>classic <\/span>cuff <\/span>for <\/span>external <\/span>complications <\/span>(cuts, <\/span>scratches, <\/span>etc.), <\/span>but <\/span>I <\/span>thought <\/span>I <\/span>didn’t <\/span>have <\/span>the <\/span>complete <\/span>solution <\/span>because <\/span>there <\/span>are <\/span>also <\/span>some <\/span>internal <\/span>complications. <\/span>So, <\/span>I <\/span>designed <\/span>a <\/span>connected <\/span>cuff <\/span>for <\/span>continuous <\/span>monitoring <\/span>using <\/span>a <\/span>sensor, <\/span>which <\/span>will <\/span>see <\/span>if <\/span>clots <\/span>are <\/span>forming, <\/span>if <\/span>there <\/span>is <\/span>a <\/span>narrowing, <\/span>and <\/span>report <\/span>it <\/span>to <\/span>a <\/span>doctor <\/span>via <\/span>an <\/span>online <\/span>platform. <\/span>The <\/span>doctor <\/span>will <\/span>then <\/span>be <\/span>able <\/span>to <\/span>bring <\/span>the <\/span>patient <\/span>in <\/span>for <\/span>a <\/span>surgical <\/span>procedure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But <\/span>that’s <\/span>not <\/span>all. <\/span>She <\/span>has <\/span>also <\/span>built <\/span>a <\/span>community <\/span>of <\/span>patients <\/span>that <\/span>support <\/span>each <\/span>other <\/span>as <\/span>they <\/span>undergo <\/span>these <\/span>onerous <\/span>treatments. <\/span>Aside <\/span>from <\/span>being <\/span>a <\/span>welcome <\/span>support <\/span>system <\/span>for <\/span>her <\/span>as <\/span>a <\/span>refugee <\/span>going <\/span>through <\/span>illness <\/span>far <\/span>away <\/span>from <\/span>home, <\/span>they <\/span>are <\/span>also <\/span>her <\/span>sounding <\/span>board, <\/span>beta <\/span>testers, <\/span>and <\/span>prospective <\/span>clients!<\/span><\/p>\n

To <\/span>develop <\/span>her <\/span>business, <\/span>she’s <\/span>benefited <\/span>from <\/span>the <\/span>support <\/span>of <\/span>different <\/span>entrepreneurship <\/span>programs <\/span>for <\/span>refugees, <\/span>like <\/span>the <\/span>SINGA <\/span>incubator <\/span>and <\/span>now <\/span>FAIRE. <\/span>They’ve <\/span>helped <\/span>her <\/span>grow <\/span>her <\/span>network <\/span>of <\/span>collaborators <\/span>to <\/span>help <\/span>push <\/span>her <\/span>idea <\/span>further <\/span>into <\/span>the <\/span>MedTech <\/span>field. <\/span>She <\/span>is <\/span>currently <\/span>looking <\/span>for <\/span>a <\/span>manufacturer <\/span>that <\/span>will <\/span>allow <\/span>her <\/span>to <\/span>build <\/span>a <\/span>complete <\/span>prototype <\/span>in <\/span>France. <\/span>“The <\/span>idea <\/span>is <\/span>to <\/span>work <\/span>with <\/span>French <\/span>manufacturers. <\/span>We’ll <\/span>send <\/span>the <\/span>first <\/span>cuffs <\/span>to <\/span>the <\/span>patients <\/span>who <\/span>ordered <\/span>them <\/span>first <\/span>and <\/span>then <\/span>they’ll <\/span>send <\/span>us <\/span>feedback. <\/span>This <\/span>possibility <\/span>of <\/span>being <\/span>able <\/span>to <\/span>readjust <\/span>the <\/span>product <\/span>every <\/span>time <\/span>requires <\/span>that <\/span>we <\/span>stay <\/span>close <\/span>to <\/span>the <\/span>patients.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Bonney’s <\/span>journey <\/span>is <\/span>just <\/span>beginning, <\/span>but <\/span>she <\/span>already <\/span>has <\/span>ideas <\/span>for <\/span>other <\/span>products <\/span>she <\/span>could <\/span>manufacture <\/span>for <\/span>dialysis <\/span>patients. <\/span>Though <\/span>she <\/span>has <\/span>faced <\/span>many <\/span>obstacles <\/span>to <\/span>get <\/span>where <\/span>she <\/span>is, <\/span>she <\/span>is <\/span>not <\/span>letting <\/span>them <\/span>stop <\/span>her. <\/span>With <\/span>this <\/span>innovative <\/span>and <\/span>ambitious <\/span>project, <\/span>she <\/span>has <\/span>found <\/span>her <\/span>path.<\/span><\/p>\n

“You <\/span>have <\/span>to <\/span>believe <\/span>in <\/span>yourself, <\/span>it’s <\/span>possible <\/span>to <\/span>be <\/span>an <\/span>entrepreneur. <\/span>You <\/span>must <\/span>be <\/span>bold, <\/span>believe <\/span>in <\/span>your <\/span>ability <\/span>to <\/span>go <\/span>all <\/span>the <\/span>way <\/span>with <\/span>your <\/span>project. <\/span>You <\/span>have <\/span>to <\/span>choose <\/span>something <\/span>that <\/span>you <\/span>like <\/span>that <\/span>you <\/span>don’t <\/span>need <\/span>to <\/span>encourage <\/span>yourself <\/span>to <\/span>do.”<\/span><\/p>\n
