Alliant rigueur scientifique, intuition artistique et refus du conformisme, sa vie est celle d&#039;une femme qui a red\u00e9fini la musique du XXe si\u00e8cle.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Coventry : N\u00e9, \u00e9lev\u00e9 et bombard\u00e9<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delia Derbyshire est n\u00e9e le 5 mai 1937 \u00e0 Coventry, ville industrielle du centre-ouest de l&#039;Angleterre o\u00f9 son p\u00e8re travaillait comme ouvrier. <strong>Depuis son enfance, la musique occupait une place centrale dans sa vie.<\/strong> Elle jouait du piano et \u00e9coutait avec passion Bach, Beethoven et Mozart, mais elle \u00e9tait tout autant fascin\u00e9e par les sons produits par les objets du quotidien.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ses premi\u00e8res ann\u00e9es furent marqu\u00e9es par une atmosph\u00e8re particuli\u00e8re. En 1940, Coventry fut lourdement bombard\u00e9e par les Allemands lors de l&#039;op\u00e9ration Moonlight Sonata. Pour sa s\u00e9curit\u00e9, elle fut envoy\u00e9e vivre chez des proches \u00e0 Preston, dans le nord du pays. La jeune Delia resta profond\u00e9ment marqu\u00e9e par le bruit des raids a\u00e9riens, des \u00e9chos qui resurgirent plus tard dans plusieurs de ses \u0153uvres, comme\u2026 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pot au Feu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1968), qui \u00e9voque le hurlement des sir\u00e8nes du Blitz m\u00eal\u00e9 aux pas des ouvriers sur les pav\u00e9s. C&#039;\u00e9tait un choix fort\u00a0: ces sons appartenaient \u00e0 la m\u00e9moire collective de sa g\u00e9n\u00e9ration. Des ann\u00e9es plus tard, lors d&#039;une convention, un fan la saluait en plaisantant\u00a0: <strong>&quot;<\/strong><\/span><strong><i>Coventry : n\u00e9, \u00e9lev\u00e9 et ravag\u00e9 !<\/i>\u00bb<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00c9l\u00e8ve brillante, elle obtint une bourse pour \u00e9tudier les math\u00e9matiques au Girton College de Cambridge. Une opportunit\u00e9 rarement offerte \u00e0 une jeune fille, et encore moins \u00e0 une jeune fille issue d&#039;un milieu ouvrier. Pourtant, sa premi\u00e8re passion restait la musique. En 1958, elle visita l&#039;Exposition universelle de Bruxelles et, en particulier, le pavillon Philips, o\u00f9 \u00e9taient expos\u00e9es les \u0153uvres d&#039;Edgard Var\u00e8se. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Po\u00e8me \u00e9lectronique<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00e9tait diffus\u00e9. Le morceau, combinant <strong>sons ressemblant \u00e0 de la respiration, percussions et sons de cloche<\/strong>Cela la fascina et intensifia son int\u00e9r\u00eat pour la musique \u00e9lectronique. L&#039;ann\u00e9e suivante, elle obtint une licence en math\u00e9matiques et musique.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apr\u00e8s avoir obtenu son dipl\u00f4me, cependant, <strong>Elle se sentait un peu perdue. Delia rejeta leurs conseils et postula chez Decca Records, qui l&#039;informa que la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 n&#039;employait pas de femmes dans ses studios d&#039;enregistrement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En qu\u00eate de meilleures opportunit\u00e9s, elle s&#039;installe \u00e0 Gen\u00e8ve, o\u00f9 elle enseigne le piano aux enfants de diplomates \u00e9trangers, puis travaille bri\u00e8vement \u00e0 l&#039;Union internationale des t\u00e9l\u00e9communications et tente m\u00eame d&#039;enseigner \u00e0 Coventry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Un an apr\u00e8s avoir obtenu son dipl\u00f4me, elle a finalement d\u00e9croch\u00e9 un <strong>poste d&#039;assistant directeur de studio \u00e0 la BBC<\/strong>Elle a notamment travaill\u00e9 sur <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examen des dossiers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, un programme d&#039;analyse d&#039;enregistrements de musique classique, o\u00f9 elle \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s appr\u00e9ci\u00e9e de ses coll\u00e8gues.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Le syst\u00e8me \u00ab\u00a0bricolage\u00a0\u00bb Delia<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ce que Delia d\u00e9sirait vraiment, cependant, c&#039;\u00e9tait cr\u00e9er de la musique\u00a0: une ambition difficile \u00e0 r\u00e9aliser, car la BBC n&#039;employait pas de compositeurs. Lorsqu&#039;elle entendit parler du Radiophonic Workshop, un d\u00e9partement exp\u00e9rimental qui produisait des ambiances sonores et des effets pour les programmes de la BBC, elle en parla \u00e0 sa hi\u00e9rarchie. <strong>Ils \u00e9taient perplexes\u00a0: l\u2019atelier \u00e9tait consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme une impasse professionnelle\u00a0; personne ne s\u2019\u00e9tait port\u00e9 volontaire pour y aller.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En 1962, elle int\u00e8gre l&#039;atelier des studios Maida Vale \u00e0 Westminster. Elle d\u00e9couvre que l&#039;\u00e9quipe n&#039;occupe que deux petites pi\u00e8ces et travaille avec des ressources extr\u00eamement limit\u00e9es. Qu&#039;importe, elle pourra enfin faire de la musique.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Comme son <strong>premier membre ayant une formation musicale formelle<\/strong>Elle contribua \u00e0 inaugurer l&#039;\u00e2ge d&#039;or de l&#039;Atelier. D\u00e8s son premier jour, elle remarqua qu&#039;il n&#039;y avait qu&#039;un seul livre dans la pi\u00e8ce, consacr\u00e9 aux fr\u00e9quences. Elle le feuilleta, prit un crayon et commen\u00e7a \u00e0 corriger les formules. <strong>Cette anecdote illustre son approche analytique, voire math\u00e9matique, de la musique. Elle traitait les compositions comme des images \u00e0 examiner et \u00e0 retoucher.<\/strong> Chaque son \u00e9tait une nuance de couleur appliqu\u00e9e sur une toile. Elle excellait en <strong>manipuler<\/strong> <strong>et<\/strong> <strong>remodeler les sons jusqu&#039;\u00e0 ce qu&#039;ils deviennent quelque chose de totalement nouveau<\/strong>elle cr\u00e9ait des constructions sur bande magn\u00e9tique si complexes qu&#039;elle devait parfois les d\u00e9rouler dans les couloirs pour les examiner correctement. Comme l&#039;a observ\u00e9 le programmeur et compositeur Alan Sutcliffe\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0\u2026\u00a0\u00bb<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pour faire des math\u00e9matiques, il faut \u00eatre obs\u00e9d\u00e9. Il faut viser la perfection.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ab Un credo qui lui convenait parfaitement. \u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L&#039;ann\u00e9e suivante, BBC One lan\u00e7a une nouvelle s\u00e9rie d&#039;aventures m\u00ealant science-fiction et histoire, mettant en sc\u00e8ne un extraterrestre du nom de Docteur voyageant dans une cabine de police. Ron Grainer fut charg\u00e9 de composer le th\u00e8me musical, mais c&#039;est Delia qui le r\u00e9alisa. <strong>Elle a cr\u00e9\u00e9 le rythme de base \u00e0 partir d&#039;une seule corde pinc\u00e9e, enregistr\u00e9e \u00e0 plusieurs reprises \u00e0 diff\u00e9rentes hauteurs et vitesses.<\/strong>Il a donn\u00e9 \u00e0 la m\u00e9lodie son aspect surnaturel en la modulant \u00e0 l&#039;aide d&#039;un oscillateur, et a cr\u00e9\u00e9 des envol\u00e9es \u00e9tranges en y ins\u00e9rant du bruit blanc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Lorsque Grainer a entendu le r\u00e9sultat final, il aurait demand\u00e9 : \u00ab<i>Ai-je vraiment \u00e9crit \u00e7a ?<\/i>\u00bb<br \/>&quot;<i>La plupart,<\/i>\u00ab Delia r\u00e9pondit avec un sourire \u00e9nigmatique. \u00bb<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Impressionn\u00e9e, Grainer a demand\u00e9 \u00e0 \u00eatre cr\u00e9dit\u00e9e comme co-compositrice, mais la BBC a refus\u00e9, pr\u00e9f\u00e9rant garder l&#039;anonymat du personnel de l&#039;atelier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le reste est bien connu : <strong>L&#039;arrangement de Delia devint le th\u00e8me principal des 17 premi\u00e8res saisons de ce qui allait devenir la s\u00e9rie de science-fiction la plus longue de l&#039;histoire de la t\u00e9l\u00e9vision.<\/strong> Elle a jou\u00e9 un r\u00f4le crucial dans la popularisation de la musique \u00e9lectronique en Grande-Bretagne. Naturellement, elle n&#039;a per\u00e7u aucun droit d&#039;auteur et son nom n&#039;a \u00e9t\u00e9 officiellement mentionn\u00e9 que lors de l&#039;\u00e9pisode du 50e anniversaire de l&#039;\u00e9mission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pendant onze ans, Delia a cr\u00e9\u00e9 le son de pr\u00e8s de 200 \u00e9missions de t\u00e9l\u00e9vision et de radio, souvent avec <strong>th\u00e8mes scientifiques, psychologiques, d&#039;horreur ou de science-fiction<\/strong>Ceux qui passaient devant la chambre 13 \u00e0 Maida Vale ont d\u00fb s&#039;interroger sur les \u00e9tranges bruits qui s&#039;en \u00e9chappaient. Faute de synth\u00e9tiseurs et de moyens ad\u00e9quats, c&#039;\u00e9tait de la pure improvisation\u00a0: <strong>Elle devait produire elle-m\u00eame les sons avant de les enregistrer et de les manipuler.<\/strong> On peut facilement l&#039;imaginer frapper un abat-jour en m\u00e9tal pour obtenir son son m\u00e9tallique pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9, ou laisser des bouteilles de vin \u00e0 diff\u00e9rents niveaux de remplissage pour produire des sonorit\u00e9s chatoyantes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ses ambitions d\u00e9passaient largement le cadre de l&#039;atelier. Charg\u00e9e de composer de la musique pour la t\u00e9l\u00e9vision \u00e0 partir de cris d&#039;animaux uniquement, elle fit ses valises et se rendit dans les plus grands zoos pour enregistrer des sons. Elle acquit rapidement la r\u00e9putation de r\u00e9aliser l&#039;impossible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L&#039;une de ses plus grandes r\u00e9ussites fut <\/span><strong><i>Voiles bleus et sables dor\u00e9s<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>, compos\u00e9 pour une \u00e9mission sur le peuple touareg.<\/strong> Elle y utilisait le son m\u00e9tallique caract\u00e9ristique de son abat-jour et sa propre voix, modul\u00e9e en une contre-m\u00e9lodie pour les chameaux traversant la chaleur du d\u00e9sert.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bien que le <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Docteur Qui<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ce th\u00e8me reste son \u0153uvre la plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bre, le <strong>Les ann\u00e9es 1964-1965 ont marqu\u00e9 l&#039;apog\u00e9e de son art.<\/strong> Durant cette p\u00e9riode, elle a collabor\u00e9 avec le dramaturge Barry Bermange sur plusieurs programmes, notamment <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Les r\u00eaves<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, dans lesquels les gens d\u00e9crivaient leurs r\u00eaves, et <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amor Dei<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explorant la croyance en Dieu, ces \u0153uvres m\u00ealaient paysages sonores \u00e9lectroniques et interviews dans des collages po\u00e9tiques.
