Amid the coronavirus crisis<\/a>, there has been a far-reaching call to refrain from \u201cgetting back to normal\u201d. For many, this modern pandemic has made the cracks in our current systems shine through. People with influence, from politicians to red-carpet celebrities and educators have lent their voices in support of a \u201cnew normal\u201d that favours environmental stewardship, the mitigation of social inequalities and a re-definition of how we create, count and distribute value in our economies. There is a call that reaches beyond borders and cultures for a change in our systems. But we\u2019re still collectively looking for the how-\u00a0 how can we #buildbackbetter?<\/span><\/p>\n

One way to do so is to include <\/span>new voices and new points of view<\/span><\/a> in creating the new normal. From where I stand in the world of innovation, the fact that<\/span> the economy needs new points of view on existing systems and behaviours <\/b>has been clear long before the coronavirus accelerated our global thinking<\/span>.<\/b> At the European scale, a source of new points of view to co-create the new normal we are craving comes from recent migration.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

My weeks are spent in a surprising paradox. Half of my time, I\u2019m equipping people who possess all the codes of leadership to think and act\u00a0 \u201cout of the box\u201d. The other half, I\u2019m equipping people who are \u201cout of the box\u201d (refugees and migrants) to develop the codes of leadership<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

I spend half of my days typically helping <\/span>universities<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>companies<\/span><\/a> and the <\/span>start-up world<\/span><\/a> be more innovative. The challenge for them is to come up with new ideas, new ways of seeing things. So I create cultures and <\/span>physical spaces<\/span><\/a> that disrupt the old ways of looking at the world. This is my work with <\/span>Wow!Labs<\/span><\/a>, an agile innovation company that I co-founded in 2011.<\/span><\/p>\n

The other half of my days is spent running a spin-off from Wow!Labs called<\/span> PLACE<\/span><\/a>. PLACE is one of several projects we launched to explore how innovation may come from unsuspected parts of society. It\u2019s an experiment looking at how refugees and migrants may be a source of innovation for Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n

Innovation and migration<\/b> \u2013 what an unusual association, I often hear. A project for refugees that does not spring from a philanthropic impulse? Refugees as an opportunity? What next?<\/span><\/p>\n

The need for new conversations<\/b><\/h4>\n

Truth is, having worked in innovation, entrepreneurship and education for the last 15 years, I feel that we, in these sectors, <\/span>need help<\/span><\/a>. We need <\/span>new points of view<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>new ideas<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>new models<\/span><\/a>. And especially, <\/span>new conversations<\/span><\/a>. Innovations that another \u201c9-step-to-success\u201d article won\u2019t give us. Perspectives can be powerfully shaken up by a unique interaction with someone who comes from a different box altogether. These conversations need to happen at the coffee-machine- this universal stereotype of idea-sharing in most workplaces-, in meetings, as well as in boardrooms. The latter is the longer shot of course.<\/span><\/p>\n

How do you \u201ccreate\u201d a point of view?<\/b><\/h4>\n

I\u2019ve come to believe that everything is a matter of where you stand. Physically as well as figuratively: a big share of the value that we have as individuals comes from the fact that we are a unique product of our world, of our individual history and how we respond<\/a> to it with our unique personalities. We do not choose our generation, gender, ethnic or geographic background, yet these factors determine, along with other factors, the way we apprehend the world. And the resulting unique point of view is precious to others who are stuck in other bodies, minds and pieces of history.<\/span><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t decide the ideas that I come up with, not more than you do. Our ideas are products of our own experience and vision of the world. That\u2019s why for new ideas, we need people who stand and have stood in different places- literally.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

People looking to <\/span>create the conditions for more innovation<\/span><\/a> often talk about creating \u201ccross-fertilization\u201d, or crossing points of view. But here\u2019s the catch: it\u2019s hard to create a diversity of points of view, without having people who have had different experiences <\/span>leading to these points of view<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s how migration and innovation can rhyme<\/b><\/h4>\n

It\u2019s hard to put a precise finger on the moment where it became obvious to me that key elements of what our systems are missing are to be found in another element that is usually perceived as a burden: refugees.<\/span><\/p>\n

It may have been on a sunny October afternoon where <\/span>Karam<\/span><\/a>, who lived in Sudan and then Malaysia, was explaining to me that meeting Omar gave him a new idea. Omar is a Syrian violinist and opera singer (and web developer in his spare time). Together, they were developing the concept of mobile music studios using new technologies to make recording cheaper. The fact that access to resources, including studios, depended on who you know in the industry seemed absurd to them- as, in fact, it is, but most Parisians have come to accept it as the norm of the industry.<\/span><\/p>\n

Or an evening with <\/span>Ahlam<\/span><\/a>, an artist from Yemen who deplores the lack of female talent using the cityscape to express their vision of the world. She is thinking of creating a collective to empower more women artists to transform public spaces.<\/span><\/p>\n

Or crossing the path of <\/span>Mayada<\/span><\/a>,<\/span> a fashion designer from Sudan, who sees the female body as a powerful medium for unique points of view to come across, especially around questions of gender equality. She actively uses fashion as a way to empower women across cultures.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Or one of many chats with <\/span>Rohullah<\/span><\/a>, a born facilitator who saw the day on a refugee camp in Afghanistan 37 years ago. Fluent in 7 languages, he earned an MBA in Norway somewhere along his amazing journey. His starting point is what is difficult for most people: to function across languages and cultures, and<\/span> facilitate collaboration<\/a> across them. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Karam, Mayada, Ahlam and Rohullah are just some of the countless examples of leaders and innovators present in the migrant community in Europe. They represent the increasingly diverse and dynamic generation that will carry the new normal forward when our ageing leaders retire. Their unique points of view cannot be mimicked, studied or estimated. Not only do they deserve an active role in the creation of the new normal, but we also need them there<\/a>. Maybe, just maybe, once their new perspectives are thrown into the mix, they can be part of the changing factors that save us from \u201cgetting back to normal\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n
