REMAP explores how Europe’s colonial past continues to shape migration and integration policies and practices today. The project brings together people with a migration background, refugees, civil society organisations, social operators, communities and policymakers to examine these legacies and co-develop new approaches to integration.

Through participatory research, storytelling, mapping, community dialogue and policy co-creation, REMAP aims to make colonial legacies more visible and support more inclusive and reflective approaches to migration and integration across Europe.

Notre projet

REMAP explores the connections between Europe’s colonial histories and contemporary migration and integration policies. These histories continue to influence how migration, identity and belonging are understood and governed, but often remain overlooked in public debate and policymaking.

The project combines research with participatory and creative methods, including focus groups, community dialogue, participatory mapping, storytelling and policy co-creation. People with a migration background and refugees are involved as co-creators of knowledge, stories, maps and recommendations.

REMAP brings together organisations and communities across six European countries: Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany and Belgium.

What will we do?

Main project results

REMAP will develop resources to support reflection, learning and action, including:

  • UN map of colonial legacies in migration and integration policies;
  • UN toolkit for decolonising integration policies;
  • UN critical glossary of colonial language;
  • UN participatory mapping portfolio;
  • A collection of stories, testimonies and participatory videos;
  • Comparative research and policy recommendations for European and national policymakers.

These resources will be openly shared with municipalities, organisations, practitioners and policymakers beyond the project consortium.

Who is it for

  • Connect historical analysis with contemporary migration and integration practices;
  • Create space for migrants, refugees and communities to contribute to knowledge and policymaking;
  • Promote participatory and co-creative approaches to policy development;
